Although there has been enormous strides made in the past twenty years, gay men and lesbian women still experience prejudice not only in the workplace but in their own family of origin as well. The experience of “coming out” is not a one time event and has many layers both seen and unseen. Internalized homophobia is real and can be a true steppingstone to greater freedom, spontaneity and aliveness once realized and dealt with in the therapeutic setting.
Feeling at home with your sexual preference is certainly a first step, but all too often one can encounter prejudice and isolation within the LGBT community as well. Navigating through this is a challenge for those just coming to terms with their sexuality and wanting to experience a healthy and balanced social life. Learning to be at home with who you are and choosing a lifestyle among the many options in the NYC gay community can be overwhelming.
It helps talking about these issues with an understanding therapist. Coming out is not just about your sexuality, it is about emerging as a whole, integrated human being. Becoming more fully alive is the goal.
