Happiness is a By-Product Not The Goal

Happiness that is based only on external events is fleeting at best. Being able to experience purpose and meaning in our lives is ultimately more satisfying. Experiencing deeper connections with others in our lives is a place to begin. Seeing our vulnerability as a strength not a weakness, and our imperfections as human and universal, allows for greater intimacy with others. Learning to let go of our false selves and see the power in our vulnerability and authenticity is incredibly appealing to others.
Most of us are simply not trusting enough to allow this to happen. The safety and confidentiality of the therapeutic setting is a great place to develop this trust. The joy of being truly seen and accepted in a non-judgmental way is what we all long for, and what brings us feelings of freedom and peace. It is in this kind of interaction where we discover who we are.
The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them. ~ Thomas Merton
