About David

Psychotherapist Upper West Side NYC David Tannenbaum, LCSW

I have been practicing psychotherapy on the Upper West Side in NYC for over thirty years, and my greatest inspiration has come from the many clients who have allowed me to witness, up close, their unique lives. Living within an urban setting like NYC presents a particular set of issues by itself, and helping others find moments of peace is a particular challenge.  It is easy to get lost in the bombardment of distractions and pressures, and lose sight of what truly matters. Living a heart centered life in a city like ours is the goal.

Helping clients manage their anxiety and get the most out of their connections to others is of primary importance for me as a psychotherapist. I have personally been influenced by many philosophers and psychologists through the ages from William James and Carl Jung, to more current psychospiritual teachers like Eckart Tolle and Jack Kornfield. I have always tried to integrate a more traditional psychotheraputic approach with more Buddhist or eastern ways of looking at the world. My desire is to help clients discover their strengths and experience a greater sense of  aliveness within a warm, interactive setting.

My Background and Experience

I received my undergraduate degree from Boston University and my LCSW from Stonybrook . I have been in private practice on the Upper West Side, NYC, since 1982. My post graduate training has included:

  • A masters degree in Esoteric psychology, a form of transpersonal psychology, and a special interest of mine for many years. It has helped me, in helping others, to cultivate their spiritual development.
  • A two year training program in the Emotional Freedom Technique, or ” tapping”, which is a form of acupressure for the emotions and is effective in helping to release early emotional trauma.
  • Since 2011 I have been on the Advisory Board of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association and facilitate a national online support group for those needing emotional support to cope with the effects of this progressive neurological condition.
  • In addition, my previous work as the clinical director of a bereavement and loss clinic has been invaluable in helping people cope with loss, such as the death of a loved one, painful divorce, loss of a job, or other major life transitions.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing, the last of all human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude on any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. ~ Victor Frankl
